It has been almost two decades now since the arrival of the internet as we know it today. In the early days of the internet most people used up dial-up service to log on. Nowadays more and more people are switching to faster internet services also known as broadband service. There are basically 4 different types of Broadband internet services available today. They are DSL, cable, wireless and FiOS. Although they all are capable of giving higher connectivity speeds, there are some basic differences between them.
DSL stands for digital subscriber line and it is the oldest type of broadband service. This service is given through regular phone lines. The advantage of this is that you can continue using your existing phone line and it will not disturb out going or incoming calls. DSL will also be cheaper compared to other broadband services. The disadvantage is that you need to be near a phone switch, which makes it impractical for rural areas. Cable broadband services are given through the same line as cable television network. Cable has the potential to give faster service compared to DSL. On the other hand it has limited bandwidth, which means if there are a lot of users in your area it will be slow during peak hours.
FiOS stands for fiber optic service and it is the newest addition in the broadband service family. This type of service tops the charts when it comes to speed. Not only that, you can get television and telephone service through FiOS. As a result providers will often give a package deal on all 3 services. In the United States Verizon is the biggest provider of FiOS broadband service. Wireless broadband works much in the same way as a cell phone works.
Once the device is hooked up to the computer, it receives signals from the nearest tower to give you broadband internet service.
